Boracay Island, Philippines

Submitted by on April 6, 2010 – 4:02 am10 Comments

Airfares and hotel room for five nights stay were booked for the forthcoming trip in Boracay, an Island in the Philippines that was voted for having the best beach in the world.  I’ve seen a lot of beaches (and b!tch*s) in Thailand like Krabi, but this will be my first time to see Boracay and the first time out on a beach in the Philippines for more than a decade, the last time was in Olongapo? Is it still safe to go there in Baloy?  Oh my, that was a long time ago.

I am not expecting too much about this trip so I won’t be disappointed, but let’s see what can the famous Boracay offers. As I am writing this article, twenty four more days to go and I’m getting excited. Well, I’m always excited with all my trips. For me, all my trips are Rest and Relaxation so no expectations (it rhymes huh).

I don’t know Boracay very well except from the comments and suggestions I got from friends who’ve been there and from the forums I have been reading for a while. But here is a factual information I got from Wikipedia, my reliable source.

According to Wikipedia, “Boracay is an island of the Philippines located approximately 315 km (200 miles) south of Manila and 2 km off the northwest tip of the island of Panay in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines.

The island comprises the barangays of Manoc-Manoc, Balabag, and Yapak (3 of the 17 barangays which make up the municipality of Malay), and is under the administrative control of the Philippine Tourism Authority in coordination with the Provincial Government of Aklan.

The island was originally home to the Ati tribe. Boracay is part of Aklan Province, which became an independent province on April 25, 1956.Formerly undiscovered, it wasn’t till the 1970s that tourism began to develop in Boracay, and the island became popular with backpackers in the 1980s.

Years ago, Boracay Island was a well-guarded secret, almost possessively so that only a few knew of its existence.

It was only in the 70s when, it is said, a foreign movie crew accidentally “discovered” this island paradise. Others maintain that it was the German traveler, ‘Jens Peters’ book, which included rave reviews of Boracay that changed the island’s pace from that of being a quiet secret to eventually being voted as having the best beach in the world.

Whichever story is true, it was around this time that Boracay Island slowly ceased to be a private travelers hangout and eventually became one of the major tourist destinations in the Philippines”.

    Hi Louie,
Congratulations! This is one heck of a blogsite. Having a colleague at work coming from Venezuela, both of us have been nudging each other secretly through our own stories which country has the best beaches in the world, Venezuela? or Philippines?. Ofcourse, being the patriotic Filipino as I am, during the school’s “Philippine Day” I subtly unfolded the beauty of Boracay through pictures.

Lo and behold, everyone including my students were awestricken with all the beauty and splendor of Boracay.

    All the best!

Hi curica41, thanks for dropping by. I visited your blog too and very good articles there.

I agree that Philippines have the best beaches in the world and can’t wait to be in Boracay in a couple of weeks.

Hi there! I also enjoyed my stay in Boracay. Loved the beach! I felt so happy I was just in the Philippines and not in another country. I was a guest at Zoe Mei resort. It’s not within the main beach which I preferred because I wanted some quiet time with my family. The food was great and the service notably exceptional. You might want to check out their site http://www.wix.com/zoemeiresort/zoe-mei-resort. Can’t wait to go back!

  • What a beautiful island. I hope you can post some more photos. Thanks for sharing. Boracay is the best ever….
