Exploring Marrakesh’s Secrets

Submitted by on January 20, 2012 – 11:24 amNo Comment

There are simply so many things that you can do in Morocco, but a trip to Marrakesh should be at the top of your list. The city is a vibrant, exciting and awe-inspiring place, with the central square, the Djemaa el Fna, coming to life at night with snake charmers and storytellers. With flights to Marrakech taking off every day there is no excuse for you to miss out on the unique opportunities that this African country has to offer.

As soon as you arrive in the country you will be confronted by the noise and the hubbub. Marrakesh is a truly unique city with so much to offer any traveller willing to throw themselves into the chaos. By simply walking into a souk you will experience an alien environment, and step back into the past. With shops offering a bevy of goods, including caves of shinning trinkets reminiscent of those seen in Aladdin. Whatever you are looking for you will probably find in this maze, everything from leather goods, carpets and jewellery. Some buyers even visit the city to get inspiration for collections and pieces. The city was also home to Yves Saint Laurent, one of the most famous fashion designers in the world. His old home is now an attraction for many of the people looking for inspiration.

Although the city is known for its eclectic atmosphere there are some strange sites in the city – monkeys being used for photographs and castanet clanging water sellers posing in all their glory. These sites are synonymous with the city, but can still take some getting used to.

At night the city comes to life and the square is the hub of activity. Street stalls pop up and orange carts offer their freshly squeezed nectar. The food is simply cooked but delicious, like much of the food on offer in the city.  Whilst you are in the city you should try the national dish Tagine, which is cooked in a huge pot over hot coals.

Marrakesh is an amazing city and you certainly won’t forget it.
